SERGEANT DONALD HALVERSON | AGE: (97) | RESIDES: MINNEAPOLIS, MN UNITED STATES ARMY – 34TH DIVISION, 168TH INFANTRY REGIMENT (INFANTRYMAN) Battles: Monte Cassino | Rome-Arno | North Apennines | Po Valley | Northern Italy SHORT BIOGRAPHY: DONALD HALVERSON left the United States for Italy on September 13, 1943, after his recruitment at the Armory in Minneapolis, HALVERSON arrived in Naples on October 13 as a replacement soldier. He hiked about an hour to meet crew leaders, who told him he was now in the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division’s 168th Regiment. He led his platoons over mountains, across minefields, and through mortar strikes, and after experiencing combat in five significant campaigns of the ETO, including Naples-Foggia, Monte Cassino, Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley. After Operation Raincoat - First Battle of Monte Cassino left most of his platoon wounded or dead, with five original soldiers alive. HALVERSON keeps his life-changing experience fighting in World War II close to him. Over the past 75 years, HALVERSON has compiled a compelling portrait of his real-life tales of war and continues to receive the honor he is due for his bravery. Today, DONALD HALVERSON resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
